Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz: "Diversity connects."
Opening on 16 September, 12 noon, on the Neumarkt
Since 1991 - over 25 years - the Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz have offered a broad space for encounters between different ethnic groups, for cooperation and participation in intercultural life and enable people to get to know and appreciate different cultures. The Intercultural Weeks will open next Saturday, 16 September 2017 at 12 noon on Neumarkt under the motto "Diversity unites".
Clubs, associations, initiatives, authorities and institutions will present their work in a variety of ways. Around 100 people from different nations and cultures will take part in the stage programme. The culinary programme also focuses on diversity: Hungarian, Polish, Vietnamese, Turkish, Ukrainian dishes and delicacies from other countries are waiting to be tasted.
Amal Ibrahim al-Nusairi and Aliya Talib - two writers from Iraq - are expected to attend the opening event. Both will read selected texts from the anthology "Through the Eyes of Inana" (a collection of writings by Iraqi women authors, also in German) at the Lila Villa Women's Centre on 18 September as part of the Intercultural Weeks. At the end of the day, the band Sawa Sawa will play: rumba, benga (originating in western Kenya), marrabenta (with roots in Mocambique), reggae (Jamaica) and soukous (from the Cuban rumba of the 1950s and originally from the Congo region) are part of their repertoire.
The Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz will take place two weeks after the opening (from 16 September to 1 October 2017). Events at various locations in Chemnitz. Associations, welfare organisations, migrant self-organisations, educational institutions, parishes and authorities will present their work, provide information on the topics of migration, integration and asylum or invite people to festivities or to join in.

The Intercultural Weeks with the ceremonial opening are prepared by the City of Chemnitz Migration Officer in cooperation with the Women's Centre Lila Villa of the association akCente e. V., the association AGIUA e. V. and the Migration Advisory Council of the City of Chemnitz.
