Adult education centre: Documentary film on hate in social media and lecture on the darknet
Over the next two weeks, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting two events dedicated to the digital world. Admission is free in both cases.
On Thursday, 28 April, 6 to 8.30 pm, in course room 4.07 of the adult education centre, the documentary film "The Cleaners" will be shown. The film from 2018 (directed by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck) documents the hate in social networks and the difficult task of those who work as "cleaners" on behalf of YouTube and Facebook.
Hate and hate speech rule the web. Despite strict rules, content that glorifies violence or is inhumane can still be found on social media. How and by whom is this content filtered out and deleted? How is it ensured that there is no censorship and that free speech is preserved?
The film shows the stressful work of thousands of external employees who sift through content every second and decide whether to publish or delete it. Following the film, there will be an opportunity to reflect on and classify the impressions in a discussion.
On Wednesday, 4 May, 7 to 8.30 p.m., in the TIETZ event hall, journalist and author Stefan Mey will shed light on the risks, absurdities and opportunities of the darknet as a digital underworld.
The darknet is a place of strange contradictions: on the one hand, it is a safe space for people who want to escape surveillance and enables opposition activists abroad to circumvent internet censorship. On the other hand, it also serves as a refuge for criminal and illegal activities. Above all, the Darknet is an efficient, liberal drug "shopping mall" where illegal narcotics are traded.
