Information stele on the old Chemnitz airport
Inauguration ceremony on 20 April, 4 p.m., in front of the old airport building
On Thursday, 20 April at 4 p.m., Mayor of Chemnitz Michael Stötzer, Thomas Rosner from the district management of Chemnitz-Süd and amateur historian Norbert Engst will officially inaugurate a new information stele in front of the old airport building. There will also be a colourful festive programme with the Ikarus Line Dancers, an exhibition of historical photos and guided tours of the old airport building. Local residents and interested parties are cordially invited to attend.
The bilingual information stele provides information about the eventful history of the old Chemnitz airport and Chemnitz aviation one hundred years ago.
The former airport building in the midst of prefabricated blocks of flats barely gives an idea of what it looked like on this site almost 100 years ago. Back then, the new Chemnitz airport had just opened and there was a runway in place of the prefabricated buildings.
Information is displayed on 220 x 60 centimetres with historical pictures. Further information can be found via QR codes.
At the request of many citizens, the city of Chemnitz erected the stele together with the Chemnitz-Süd neighbourhood management and the owner of the building, Centerscape Deutschland. Residents of the Fritz Heckert area with an interest in history were also involved in the development of the texts. The stele is the first in the Kappel neighbourhood and was entirely privately financed by the owner.
