Information on the general veterinary order for the control of avian influenza in a wild bird
The highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus of subtype H5 was detected in a dead wild bird (bird of prey, buzzard) recovered in the town of Flöha on 15 February 2017. As a result, the food monitoring and veterinary office of the district of Central Saxony officially declared an outbreak of avian influenza in this wild bird on 21 February 2017.
Of the restriction areas (restricted area and observation area) established in accordance with the Avian Influenza Ordinance around the location where the bird of prey was found dead, the observation area also extends to the urban area of Chemnitz. The city area is not affected by the restricted area.
The observation area already established in the general animal health decree of the Food Monitoring and Veterinary Office of the City of Chemnitz dated 27 January 2017 due to the detection of the highly pathogenic influenza virus in a heron in the Plaue district of the city of Flöha is now extended to include the districts of:
Glösa-Draisdorf, Borna-Heinersdorf, Furth, Altendorf, Schlosschemnitz, Kaßberg, Zentrum, Kapellenberg, Kappel, Helbersdorf and Altchemnitz .
In the newly designated observation area, certain restrictions and bans apply to owners of poultry and other captive birds.
Owners of dogs and cats as well as those authorised to hunt are also affected by the protective measures in the observation area. For example, dogs and cats are not allowed to roam freely. Hunting game birds is also prohibited.
The obligation to keep birds indoors, which has been in force throughout the Free State of Saxony since mid-November, must continue to be observed throughout the city of Chemnitz.
The office asks the public to report any increased numbers of wild birds found dead.
