Information from the public health department on the coronavirus
The city of Chemnitz is prepared should a case of the coronavirus occurring in China be confirmed here, says Dr Harald Uerlings, Head of the Health Department.
Both the health department and the fire brigade and hospitals have reviewed their procedures for such a possible case of infection.
Since December 2019, there has been an increase in cases of respiratory illnesses caused by this novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan, the capital of the central Chinese province of Hubei. Transmission is possible from person to person.
A suspected case only exists if the following three circumstances apply:
- Entry from the province of Hubei or contact with such persons.
- Fever, cough, shortness of breath, sometimes also diarrhoea
- The symptoms begin 2 to 14 days after contact with an infected person.
If all three points are met - and only then - the health authority advises the following steps:
- Affected persons should stay at home,
- Those affected should avoid contact with other people,
- Those affected should then inform the emergency services by telephone and explicitly state that they have travelled from the infected area.
Further treatment steps will then be carried out by the specialists.
