Information event on the zoo masterplan
On Thursday, 17 January 2019, 6 p.m., the master plan for Chemnitz Zoo will be presented in a public information event in the smac lecture room (5th floor) due to the great interest shown. Following a presentation on the idea, phases and planned implementation of the master plan, Mayor Miko Runkel and zoo director Dr Anja Dube will be available to answer questions, receive suggestions and make proposals for further development.
In December 2018, Chemnitz City Council approved the masterplan for Chemnitz Zoo. The project envisages a multi-year transformation of the zoo into a concept zoo. Visitors will then embark on a journey through the history of the earth and the development of vertebrates. The starting point will be the amphibians that have been successfully kept for many years. They represent a unique selling point that is recognised throughout Europe. The importance of amphibians for life on our continent is illustrated with attractively designed aquariums and terrariums. From here, the journey through time continues via the age of the giants (dinosaurs), the development of birds and mammals to the development of humans and the domestication of pets. In all eras, animal species that developed during this time are presented in modern and species-appropriate enclosures. Where possible, animals are socialised to create more space for the animals and increase the attractiveness of the enclosures for visitors. Where feasible, visitors should also be able to get very close to the animals, in some cases through walk-through enclosures. Elements of education and active experience will be embedded.
