Increasing road safety for pedestrians
Traffic relief on Walter-Klippel-Straße between Augustusburger Straße and Eubaer Straße from 28 April
In order to reduce the high volume of traffic on Walter-Klippel-Straße (especially through traffic), a temporary ban on entering Walter-Klippel-Straße from Eubaer Straße will be imposed from 28 April.
Regular services will be maintained and buses will be allowed to enter the road. Buses can continue in the direction of the Ostrowskiweg junction without obstruction via a signalled bus gate. Traffic travelling in the direction of Eubaer Straße will then be stopped by traffic lights before Ostrowskiweg.
In order to prevent slow-moving traffic via Ostrowskiweg, entry from Eubaer Straße will also be prohibited here. This entrance will be authorised for cycle traffic with additional signs.
This measure is expected to relieve the Walter-Klippel-Straße of more than 1000 vehicles per day. The diversion will be via Eubaer Straße/Kirchweg/Augustusburger Straße. The measure is expected to last until around mid-2018. After that, a full closure of Walter-Klippel-Straße is planned for the next three years due to sewer and road construction.
Due to the special local and traffic conditions on Walter-Klippel-Straße between Eubaer Straße and Augustusburger Straße, there is a hazardous situation that requires traffic law measures to increase road safety.
Pedestrians are particularly in need of protection here, especially schoolchildren and elderly people who use Walter-Klippel-Straße in longitudinal traffic. The carriageway of the approx. 1 km long road is between four and five metres wide. The volume of vehicles has almost doubled in recent years due to the increase in through traffic. There is neither a pavement alongside the road nor a continuous verge that could serve as a safety space for pedestrians. The verge has to be regularly repaired, as vehicles regularly swerve into the verge when they meet.
Last year, the civil engineering department had already examined short-term structural and traffic law measures with the result that fully paved hard shoulders, passing places or paving to reduce speed are not financially justifiable as temporary solutions until the planned sewer and road construction from mid-2018.
In 2016, the waiting area at the Scheerenweg bus stop was widened by the municipal building yard.
Traffic law measures (designating a one-way street between Augustusburger Straße and Eubaer Straße, closing the road to through traffic with traffic signs, closing off the road with traffic devices such as barriers or bollards) were deemed unsuitable or disproportionate.
