Inauguration of the tactile model of Chemnitz city centre

On Wednesday, 25 April, at 3 pm, Mayor Barbara Ludwig and the Bürgerstiftung für Chemnitz will inaugurate the tactile model of Chemnitz city centre in front of the entrance to the town hall. Media representatives are cordially invited.
The Citizens' Foundation for Chemnitz, which is one of the main initiators of the project, is donating the tactile model to the city of Chemnitz. The project was realised thanks to donations from citizens, businesses and funding from the Free State of Saxony.
The tactile model is a replica of the city of Chemnitz and enables blind and visually impaired people to feel the shapes of the buildings, structures of the streets and dimensions of the sights. For example, the Hotel Mercure or the bell tower of the town hall can be felt on a scale of 1:750. Braille lettering provides the necessary explanations of the most important buildings and places in Chemnitz. The approx. 1 metre by 1.5 metre bronze model is also used by tour guides and tourist groups as a starting point for guided tours. Children can also playfully explore the city.
The Chemnitz tactile model is the fourth of its kind in Saxony, alongside St Thomas' Church in Leipzig, the mining town of Freiberg and Königstein Fortress. It was created by the artist Egbert Broerken using the lost wax technique.
