Inauguration of the 3rd "women's centre" in Chemnitz
As part of the "frauenorte sachsen" project, the Landesfrauenrat Sachen e. V., together with the Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Chemnitz and the Marianne Brandt Society, inaugurates a plaque in honour of Marianne Brandt. This will be placed at the Bauhaus artist's parents' house on Chemnitz's Kaßberg, Heinrich-Beck-Straße 22, where the Marianne Brandt Society is also based.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig and Chemnitz designer Prof. Claus Dietel will also be present at the unveiling of the plaque on 1 October 2019 at 2 pm. The inauguration will be accompanied by a small cultural programme.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited.
"Marianne Brandt, born in Chemnitz in 1893, is probably the most important German metal designer. Her designs had a significant influence on product design in the 20th century. Products based on her designs are exhibited in renowned museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This is now the third woman from Chemnitz to be honoured in this way after Ernestine Minna Simon (textile worker and strike leader in the Chemnitz stock spinning mill) and Luise Marie Pleißner (peace activist, women's rights campaigner and teacher). The three women's personalities were submitted by the Chemnitz women's initiatives. A jury of experts from the Saxony Women's Council selected them from over 50 nominations throughout Saxony. There are now 19 "women's places" throughout Saxony.
