"In the centre of greenery": Pedestrianised boulevard in the Markersdorf district is being redesigned - a beautiful place to linger all year round

At the beginning of November, the Parks Department will begin redesigning the Markersdorf-Nord pedestrian area. "In the centre of greenery" - this is the motto for the careful redevelopment of the pedestrian area on Wilhelm-Firl-Straße.
The pedestrian area in the residential area, which was created in the 1980s, has not been an ornament for years. Its design elements are damaged and partially overgrown with greenery. There is a need for action here, above all due to the heavy wear and tear of paths, a staircase and furnishing elements. Their desolate substance impairs the road safety of pedestrians. The exact construction schedule will depend on the weather conditions during the winter months.

As part of the work, the disused fountains and the defective steps next to the popular civic centre will be demolished. In their place, a ramp will make access easier for parents with pushchairs and people with disabilities. Residents also wanted the steep path from Wilhelm-Firl-Straße to the pedestrianised boulevard to be barrier-free. Landscape architect Lutz Beier from Iproplan was happy to take up this suggestion from the residents when he presented the project in the residential area last autumn.

The pedestrianised boulevard should have an open and friendly appearance in future. Next spring, 24 new trees are to be planted to replace those felled in the spring. When designing the area and selecting the shrubs and trees, the landscape architect and the city took care to minimise maintenance requirements and therefore maintenance costs. Nevertheless, the aim is to create a beautiful sight all year round with flowering shrubs that will later bear fruit.

Parents and children living nearby will be particularly pleased with the new seating, play equipment and a sand court for ball games as well as a boules area. Such an area for the French ball sport, which is now also popular in Germany, will be located in the immediate neighbourhood of the former "Würfel". It is possible that this area will be one of the favourite places here in future. After all, the intergenerational activities offered by the citizens' initiative Morgenleite-Markersdorf Nord (BIMM), which moved into the "Würfel" in 2011, and its community centre "Bei Heckerts" attract both younger and more mature residents to this location anyway.

The city of Chemnitz estimates the investment for this construction project at around 160,000 euros, around 50 per cent of which is being subsidised by the federal and state funding programme Stadtumbau Ost Teil Aufwertung. The city of Chemnitz is contributing 80,000 euros itself.
