In search of traces of "black diamonds"
Adult education centre: Online lecture on 13 January, 6 to 7.30 pm
On Thursday, 13 January, from 6 to 7.30 pm, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting an online lecture entitled "Saxon coal - the bread and butter of industry?".
Heino Neuber, the collection manager of the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum, will go on a historical search for traces of the "black diamonds" and their significance for the industrialisation of Saxony.

Saxony is a land of mining: one of the main drivers of Saxony's industrialisation in the 19th century were the local coal deposits in the three large mining districts of Zwickau, Lugau-Oelsnitz and Döhlener Becken. As the "bread and butter of industry", hard coal was of great importance for Saxony's pioneering role during industrialisation in Germany. It was spread across a total of eight deposits - names such as Georgius Agricola, Otto Lilienthal, Karl Marx, Richard Hartmann, Karl May and Adolf Hennecke are associated with this branch of mining.
The lecture spans an arc from the first utilisation of coal in the Middle Ages to the cessation of mining for uranium-bearing hard coal in Dresden-Gittersee in 1989. The history of hard coal is explained in detail.
The event is a co-operation between the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
