In memory of the victims of arbitrariness and persecution
Mayor Ludwig speaks on Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the public commemorative event to mark the anniversary of the popular uprising of 17 June 1953
The anniversary of the popular uprising in the GDR on 17 June 1953 will be commemorated in Chemnitz on Tuesday, 17 June with a public memorial event at the memorial stele (Hohe Straße). Mayor Barbara Ludwig will commemorate the victims of the uprising with a speech and calls on the people of Chemnitz to take part in the event.
The commemorative event will begin at 11 a.m. at the memorial stele, which was erected in the Hohe Straße area in 1999: The stele made of Halmstadt gneiss bears the inscription "To the victims of tyranny 1945-1989". Free guided tours of the memorial will take place beforehand, from 09:30 to 10:30.
As in previous years, the memorial event on Kaßberg is being organised by the Chemnitz district group of the Association of Victims of Stalinism (VOS). A contemporary witness and member of the Chemnitz district group of the Association of Victims of Stalinism will also speak at the commemorative event.
