Improving road safety on Neefestraße between Lützowstraße and Jaenickestraße
Left turners get their own traffic light signal
On Thursday, 28 March, measures to increase traffic safety will be implemented at the Neefestraße/Jaenickestraße/Carl-Hamel-Straße traffic lights. Traffic turning left from Jaenickestraße and from Carl-Hamel-Straße into Neefestraße will be given their own signal heads.
As a result of the increase in traffic accidents (2016: 27 traffic accidents with three serious and six minor injuries), the accident commission carried out a local accident investigation in 2017, which identified two main conflicts:
- Conflicts between drivers turning left onto Jaenickestraße or Carl-Hamel-Straße, who are obliged to wait, and drivers coming from the opposite direction (turning accidents)
- Conflicts between drivers travelling in the same direction (rear-end collisions)
As a result, the accident commission decided in September 2017 to keep left-turning traffic conflict-free. After revising the signalling programme last year, the system can now go into operation with this modified traffic routing.
In addition to the rear-end collisions at the Jaenickestraße junction, numerous accidents in Neefestraße's longitudinal traffic are also recorded by the police every year (e.g. 2016: 44 traffic accidents, 2018: 48 traffic accidents). The main causes of accidents were insufficient safety distance and incorrect lane changes.
Different speeds currently apply between Kappler Drehe and Jaenickestraße (50, 60 and 70 km/h in some stretches). In order to ensure a constant speed level and at the same time reduce the number of accidents, the local standard speed of 50 km/h will be imposed up to the Jaenickestraße junction.
Drivers will be made particularly aware of this by using reflective foil to make the 60 and 70 km/h signs ineffective.
