Improving cycle traffic guidance on Zwickauer Straße
On Tuesday, 14 April, construction work will begin to improve the cycle lane on Zwickauer Straße in the Marianne-Brandt-Straße area.
A cycle lane is missing for around 230 metres between Zwickauer Straße house number 62 and Barbarossastraße. This ends in the landward lane before the junction with Marianne-Brandt-Straße and requires cyclists to merge into the flow of traffic, which leads to dangerous situations. To improve road safety, the cycle lane will therefore be extended to a width of 1.85 metres beyond the junction with Barbarossastrasse.
A cycle lane will be created by reducing the green strip between the carriageway and the tram tracks. To achieve this, six hazel trees had to be felled in the run-up to the project, for which replacement planting will take place on Barbarossastrasse and Zwickauer Strasse. The left-turn lane into Goethestraße will be closed during the construction work. A diversion will be in place via Zwickauer Straße- Ulmenstraße-Ahornstraße-Barbarossastraße.
The construction work is scheduled to last until 29 May 2020. The construction costs amount to around 200,000 euros. The Free State of Saxony is supporting this project with around 80 per cent as part of its funding for municipal road and bridge construction.
BS Uni-Bau GmbH from Chemnitz was commissioned to carry out the construction work.
