Important milestone reached in the municipal economy

Bridge excavation creates barrier-free connection from Jakobstraße to Stadtwirtschaft

Yesterday, Wednesday, the construction work on the Stadtwirtschaft reached an important milestone. The new bridge as a barrier-free connection from Jakobstraße to the Stadtwirtschaft was lifted into the bridge piers. In future, this will provide access to building complex A, which will offer many rooms for new users as well as an event hall and a neighbourhood canteen. Building A is due to be completed by August 2024. The FabLab of Stadtfabrikanten e.V. is currently moving into the already completed rooms on the ground floor.

On the site of the former city cleaning plant on the southern Sonnenberg, a place for creative makers will be created by the end of this year with the city economy in the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Based on the development scenario adopted in 2021, 5,000 square metres of usable space in five buildings and 6,000 square metres of courtyard space will be renovated in stages. The entire area is to be developed into a place for encounters, art and culture, education and as a creative production site, thus establishing it as a creative quarter with the function of a district centre for Sonnenberg.

House B is already under construction and the smaller House E is currently being handed over. The courtyard design, which was developed in workshops together with stakeholders from the neighbourhood, will begin in the summer. The district warehouse in House K is due to be handed over at the end of 2024.

The Stadtwirtschaft is the largest maker hub in the Capital of Culture and the region. The project is being supported with approx. 6.5 million euros in federal and state urban development funding, with funding from the European ERDF fund and funding as a national urban development project as well as additional state funding.
