Hydrogen centre instead of Technology Campus South
City council decides to withdraw the development plan amendment
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to cancel the planned amendment to the development plan for the "Technology Campus South" special area (B-225/2018). The area of around 30,000 square metres was intended exclusively for the expansion of the Technical University.
The new hydrogen research centre "Hydrogen and Mobility Innovation Center" (HIC) is now to be built on this site. This location, which has been agreed with the City of Chemnitz, means that it is no longer necessary to amend the legally binding development plan. The HIC is both an institute of Chemnitz University of Technology and an entrepreneurial technology centre.
With the HIC in Chemnitz, a concept has been developed under the direction of the innovation cluster HZwo e.V. in order to offer the best conditions for hydrogen activities within the national hydrogen strategy. This concept is backed by a broad alliance of Saxon companies, research institutions and universities. Associations and state politicians are also supporting the project based in Chemnitz.
A state-of-the-art campus with a vehicle laboratory, test benches and a training centre will be built in the immediate vicinity of the university. The first step is to create 80 to 120 jobs for researchers and technicians at the HIC.
The Federal Ministry of Transport is funding the new national research centre with around 60 million euros to support industry and society in the transition to hydrogen.
