On Thursday, 12 June, from 6 to 7.30 p.m., interested parties are invited to the lecture "Language and democracy: How does populist rhetoric work?" in TIETZ, course room 4.07. Linguist Prof. Dr Werner Holly will focus on populist rhetoric and argumentation strategies and address the question of how these can be recognised and understood as strategic tools.

Modern democracies are facing major challenges. These include crises and uncertainties, climate change, wars and violence, geopolitical shifts, social inequalities, cultural tensions, economic hardship and political divisions. Dissatisfaction or feelings of insecurity and powerlessness in particular can be seized upon by anti-democratic movements, radicalised and turned against the democratic system in a populist manner. In doing so, populists across all party boundaries use linguistic means that can be precisely described and analysed.
In this event, these rhetorical patterns and mechanisms of populism will be presented and discussed using selected examples. The speaker, Prof Dr Werner Holly, is a linguist and has been working on the topics of the evening for many years. He would like to enter into dialogue with the audience.
