Participation and involvement welcome! The City of Chemnitz Migration Officer is once again calling on interested parties to take part in this year's Festival of Cultures and the Intercultural Weeks under this year's title "Heimat im Herzen - Vielfalt in Chemnitz" from 20 September to 5 October 2025.
Anyone interested in taking part in the opening and the subsequent two-week series of events can register their interest at www.chemnitz.de/ikw by 31 May 2025.
Chemnitz residents who would like to support the organisers as volunteers or with donations are also welcome to get in touch.
The Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz will open on Saturday, 20 September at 12 noon with a colourful and intercultural programme, the Festival of Cultures, on the market square. Participation is expressly encouraged: in addition to information, artistic and sporting activities, culinary offerings and creative contributions are also welcome.
The opening with the Festival of Cultures is also part of the "haamit heimaten" festival in Chemnitz, which is being organised by the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH from 18 to 21 September 2025.
Chemnitz is home to people from more than 140 nations. The festival "haamit heimaten" is a contribution to the German-language decentralised festival "heimaten", initiated by the House of World Cultures in Berlin.
During the subsequent Intercultural Weeks, Chemnitz residents are invited by clubs, associations, institutions and organisations to find out more about the topics of migration, integration and asylum and to take advantage of offers for tolerant and peaceful coexistence.
Participation is also welcome here: participants are free to decide what they would like to offer and in what form. Theatre performances, film screenings, dance classes and concerts, country evenings, sporting events, readings and discussions with authors, panel discussions, training courses, lectures, workshops and information events on a wide range of topics, as well as exchanges between religions and much more are intended to arouse interest in people and encounters. The variety of events on offer is intended to appeal to everyone in Chemnitz and encourage them to get involved.
"The Intercultural Weeks - the festival of cultures at the opening and the series of events themselves - fit seamlessly into the programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which was opened on 18 January 2025 with an all-day programme. We are following the motto 'C the Unseen' and showing that Chemnitz is a cosmopolitan and diverse city and invite all Chemnitz residents to celebrate neighbourly togetherness with us," says Etelka Kobuß, Migration Officer of the City of Chemnitz.
The Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz are prepared and implemented by the Migration Officer in close cooperation with the Migration Advisory Board, the Social Welfare Office, the AGIUA e. V. Migration Social and Youth Work Association, the Lila Villa Women's Centre in the akCente e. V. association, the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH and with the support of numerous Chemnitz associations and initiatives.
Every year since 1991, the two-week series of events "Intercultural Weeks" in Chemnitz has set an example for peaceful and positive coexistence in our city.
The Intercultural Weeks have been organised nationwide since the 1970s.
The Intercultural Weeks are firmly established throughout Germany with 5,000 events at more than 500 locations.
