Holocaust Writing and Arts Contest of Akron
Award ceremony for Chemnitz participants on 28 August, 4 p.m. in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Säulensaal
13 students from Chemnitz took part in this year's international Holocaust Writing and Arts Contest organised by the city of Akron.
On Tuesday 28 August at 4 pm in the Columned Hall of the Chemnitz Art Collections, the pupils from Georgius Agricola Grammar School and the Montessori School will receive their awards from the Head of the Art Collections, Dr Frédéric Bußmann, in the presence of their parents, teachers and head teachers. During the event, the submitted works will be presented and viewed together.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
In 2018, the Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest of Chemnitz's twin city Akron (Ohio) took place for the 30th time. With this annual competition, the city of Akron aims to sensitise young people to the crimes of the Holocaust and remember the millions of innocent victims. This year's theme was "Lessons of the Holocaust: The Lives of the Children". The focus was on the suffering of children during the Holocaust.
In order to deal with the topic artistically, the students were able to choose from the categories of visual arts, literature and multimedia presentation.
Each category was judged individually by a competition committee and additionally divided into two age groups (grades 5 to 8 and grades 9 to 12). The international participants were judged independently of the participants from the USA.
Four 1st prizes were awarded to pupils from Chemnitz. This means that they were more successful this year than last. In addition to 1st prize in the international fine arts category, student Ngoc Anh Phan also received 1st prize in the student selection from Akron.
Pupils from the Montessori School Chemnitz and the Georgius Agricola Grammar School also successfully took part in this competition last year.
