Adult Education Centre: Presentation of the book on 27 April, Jewish Community
On Wednesday, 27 April, from 5 pm at the Jewish Community Chemnitz, Stollberger Straße 28, the historian Dr Jürgen Nitsche and the director of the adult education centre, Grit Bochmann, will present their illustrated study "Die Volkshochschule Chemnitz und ihr jüdisches Erbe". In the book, they summarise the results of their research into the Jewish history of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, which was founded in 1919.
Admission is free. Wearing a mask is still compulsory in the Jewish community, but it can be removed at the venue. Furthermore, participants must present an up-to-date test, regardless of their vaccination and recovery status, which can also be taken on site in the entrance area of the Jewish Community.
The history of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is closely linked to the commitment of Jewish doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, artists and Jewish intellectuals:and Jewish intellectuals - especially in the early years from 1909 and during the Weimar Republic until National Socialism swept the country.
Would the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre have been founded at all without its Jewish supporters more than 100 years ago? This comprehensive work explores these and other questions through the stories of people who have shaped the Adult Education Centre throughout its history. The production of the book was funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community in the 2021 commemorative year "1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany".
Dr Jürgen Nitsche and Grit Bochmann will present excerpts and outstanding stories from the book and encourage a joint discussion. Afterwards, there will be further opportunities for personal dialogue over a kosher snack.
