Highlights of nature photography on display in 2023
Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz: Exhibition opening on 8 November, 5 pm, TIETZ
On Wednesday, 8 November at 5 pm, interested parties are invited to the opening of this year's special exhibition "Highlights of Nature Photography" at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz in the TIETZ. Once again, prizes were awarded in eight categories from almost 20,000 entries from all over the world, and an overall winner and the winners of two special awards were chosen.
At the exhibition opening, wildlife photographer Dominik Kwetkat from Annaberg-Buchholz will talk about the art of camouflage as a nature photographer.
Representatives of the media are also invited.
The international competition "Highlights of Nature Photography" now looks back on a 25-year tradition. During this time, photographic technology has undergone revolutionary changes - from digital photography to the use of drones, which open up completely new possibilities for photographers. At the same time, a new trend is recognisable: the captured moment is being replaced by a well thought-out composition that focuses on the essentials.
Participation in the international photo competition was again very high this year - a four-member jury selected the winning images from almost 20,000 entries. The overall winner of the 2023 competition is Mark Chen from the USA. His picture "The Sentry" shows the forlornness of a dead tree in a completely dissolved landscape. The high water that washes around the trunk and roots and the dense fog blend into an impenetrable, almost non-representational background.
The photo was taken on a coastal beach near Jacksonville in the US state of Florida.
The jurors justified their choice with "the ability to go beyond the representational and use symbolism to ask about the message. This work searches for the essential and elementary. A dying figure loses itself in infinity."
Motifs from the popular categories "Beauty of Plants", "Artists on Wings", "World of Mammals" and others also show the cheerful side of nature photography.
The exhibition of this year's winning images will be stopping off in Chemnitz on its tour through Germany until 7 January 2024. It can be viewed during the opening hours of the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm (closed on Wednesdays) and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 am to 6 pm.
Please note that the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz is closed on 24 and 31 December.
