Highlights of nature photography 2024
Museum of Natural History: Exhibition opening on 6 November, 5 pm, at the vhs
On Wednesday, 6 November at 5 p.m., the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz exhibition "Highlights of Nature Photography 2024" will open in the gallery of the adult education centre on the 5th floor of the TIETZ. At the opening, Chemnitz photographer Anne Lindner will talk about the "Adventure of Wildlife Photography". Admission to the exhibition is free.
The winning exhibition of the annual international photo competition "Highlights of Nature Photography" will also stop off in Chemnitz in 2024. From over 19,000 entries from 34 countries, a four-member jury selected the winners in eleven categories and chose an overall winner. The overall winner of this year's competition is Simon Schneider from Upper Bavaria. He managed to capture the dive of a kingfisher in the British Midlands from a photo hide using four flash units in such a way that even the colourful plumage comes into its own. His shot stood out from the crowd so much that the jury's decision was unusually easy this time.
While the kingfisher adorns the exhibition poster, a bird of prey hands over the invitation to the vernissage. A snow vulture from the Tibetan plateau, which Xingchao Zhu captured with a remote-controlled camera at a wide angle as it landed, looks curiously at the viewer. This portrait was honoured with the competition's Fritz Pölking Award in 2024.
In addition to the popular categories "Magnificent Wilderness", "The Beauty of Plants" or "Moments in Nature" and the drone shots that have been represented in the competition since 2019, a new category was introduced in 2024 with "Add with AI". It honours the careful enhancement of nature shots with artificial intelligence: as in the case of the winner Markus van Hauten, who combined the view from a difficult-to-access cave in Iceland with the Northern Lights, which he was unable to observe there himself.
The exhibition can be seen from 7 November 2024 to 12 January 2025 on the 5th floor of the adult education centre. The opening and closing times of the adult education centre apply.
