Highlights of nature photography 2021
Museum of Natural History: Special exhibition from 17 November to 9 January, TIETZ
From Wednesday, 17 November, the travelling exhibition "Highlights of Nature Photography 2021" will be making a stop in Chemnitz on its tour through Germany. It will be on display at the Museum of Natural History in the TIETZ until 9 January 2022. Here, however, the exhibition will be enhanced in a special way: selected photographs will be supplemented with zoological specimens from the museum's own collection, adding a spatial aspect to the viewing of the images.
The Highlights of Nature Photography has been running for 23 years. Participation in the international photo competition was again very high this year - a jury selected the winning images from 16,916 pictures by 883 photographers from 37 countries.
The winner of the 2021 competition is Fran Rubia from Spain. His picture "The Observer" shows a red fox sitting on a patch of snow with its back to the photographer. The photo was taken in Yellowstone National Park in the USA. The fox was obviously watching the snow below and listening for prey. "Everything is right: the posture of the fox, the view from behind, yet the viewer can sense the animal's attention. The white of the snow is an ideal setting for the colourful main motif," say the competition organisers. The judges commented on their decision by saying that the picture has a profound symbolic effect, especially in the current times: "Not looking backwards to what has been. Looking forward to an uncertain future. Peace despite uncertainty - almost all of us have experienced all of this in the past year."
The special exhibition can be viewed during the opening hours of the Museum of Natural History:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 5pm and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 6pm (closed on Wednesdays and 24 and 31 December).
