High demand for childcare places in Chemnitz daycare centres
Legal entitlement is secured
The desire of many parents for supplementary education and upbringing in a daycare centre or childcare facility is currently ensuring high capacity utilisation of the available childcare places in Chemnitz. Contrary to reports to the contrary in recent days, the legal entitlement to a childcare place is being fulfilled.
Are there enough childcare places available?
The City of Chemnitz ensures that all parents have a legal entitlement to a nursery and kindergarten place by planning the demand for places in daycare centres, even if not always in the desired facility, in the district where they live or on the desired admission date.
Chemnitz daycare centres and childminders currently (as of Jan. 2016) have a capacity of just under 3,200 places for children under the age of three and just under 7,100 places for children aged three and over until they start school. The capacity utilisation of the facilities is slightly lower at the time mentioned, at 98.9% in the crèche sector and 98.4% in the nursery sector. Of the total of 10,115 children admitted to the daycare centres, 179 are children of refugee families. This corresponds to a share of 1.8%.
Demand planning is updated and implemented annually, taking into account current birth rates and demographic trends. The required place capacities are regularly adjusted in order to ensure sufficient childcare places on the one hand, but also to ensure that there are not too many places that are not needed.
Will new places be created?
From March/April 2016, the Usti nad Labem 197 street daycare centre with a potential capacity of 24 crèche and 66 nursery places as well as five daycare places will be added to the current capacity.
In August 2016, 2,019 current kindergarten children will start school again, meaning that this capacity will of course be available again on a regular basis.
Furthermore, the construction of three new facilities with a capacity of 100 places each and the reactivation of the Sonnenstraße 42 daycare centre with 88 places are planned for 2017.
When and from whom will parents be informed whether their child can attend the daycare centre?
By the end of February/beginning of March, the directors of the daycare centres in Chemnitz will prepare the admission of children to their respective facilities from August to December 2016 and inform parents.
When registering for certain daycare centres or districts in the months of March to July, experience has shown that parents who prefer specific admission dates or specific daycare centres may have to wait until the children start school. This can lead to a cancellation for the time being or in the meantime.
What happens if the preferred daycare centre cancels?
If parents receive a cancellation from their preferred daycare centre, they can find out about available places on the Kita-Portal or at the Office for Youth and Family Affairs and receive an alternative offer of a place.
