Helmut König signs the city's Golden Book

On Monday, 13 May at 9.30 a.m., mathematician Dr Helmut König will be honoured with an entry in the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz. The entry will take place in the City Council Chamber of Chemnitz City Hall. Dr Helmut König will be honoured for his voluntary work and achievements in mathematics and the promotion of mathematical talent.

Dr Helmut König has been involved in promoting mathematically gifted and interested pupils since the 1960s. The 90-year-old is one of the most recognised mathematicians in Germany and has made Chemnitz famous in this field. He is regarded as the founder of the Adam Rieß Competition, which was launched in 1981. Since 1977, he has worked as a reviewer on the central task committee of the Maths Olympiad and has successfully campaigned for all levels of the Maths Olympiad to be held throughout Germany.
This year, the national round of the 2019 Maths Olympiad will take place in Chemnitz. 197 pupils from all over Germany beat 200,000 competitors to determine their winners in two 4.5-hour exams.
