New services for blind and visually impaired people at Chemnitz City Library
Chemnitz City Library has added two new services for blind and visually impaired customers.
A new DAISY listening station has been available for barrier-free listening to audio books since the beginning of October. This is equipped with a special player for CDs in DAISY format.
With the VictorReader , all the advantages of the DAISY format can be optimally utilised. The device is equipped with large, easy to feel and high-contrast coloured function keys, a built-in loudspeaker and a headphone output. Operation is particularly user-friendly thanks to the clearly organised number of buttons. A second DAISY player of the same type is available in the city library for out-of-home lending. The two VictorReaderswere purchased with funding from the Saxon investment programme "Favourite places for all" to reduce barriers.
Chemnitz City Library has also expanded its range of DAISY audio books in cooperation with the German Centre for Accessible Reading(dzb lesen). Chemnitz City Library has been offering DAISY audio books for loan for ten years. The extensive stock of around 100 fiction and non-fiction titles has now been expanded to 120 copies.
With the "Chance Inklusion" initiative, the German Centre for Accessible Reading(dzb lesen) provides the Chemnitz City Library with a DAISY audiobook package every six months. It includes 20 current fiction and non-fiction titles that have been available to Chemnitz library customers with visual impairments to borrow for the first time since the beginning of October. The dzb lesen audio books can be found in the central library in Tietz.

Lending - both the VictorReader and the dzb audio books- is prioritised for people with certified visual impairment. We therefore ask for appropriate proof.
What is DAISY?
DAISY is the name of a worldwide standard for navigable, accessible multimedia documents. The abbreviation DAISY stands for Digital Accessible Information System. The key difference to conventional audio books is the comprehensive navigation functions of the DAISY format. Its structure allows users to browse through it like a real book. Individual sections, sentences and even words can be selected in a DAISY audio book. Information about the book is also made audible for blind and visually impaired people. Last but not least, users can set bookmarks and adjust the speaking speed - without changing the speaking pitch.
