Handover of funding decisions for broadband expansion

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Mayor Michael Stötzer will receive the funding from the Free State of Saxony for broadband expansion. State Secretary Stefan Brangs will present the City of Chemnitz, which successfully participated in the 4th federal funding call, with the notification of the state funding totalling 16.2 million euros. The funds will be used to co-finance the federal funding programme for underserved areas with less than 30 Mbit/s.

At the end of July, Mayor Barbara Ludwig already received the federal funding totalling 20.37 million euros from Federal Minister of Transport Alexander Dobrindt for broadband expansion in the city. (see press release number 433 from 27 July 2017) The total construction costs amount to around 40.5 million euros. The city of Chemnitz is contributing a share of 4.1 million euros. The funding is to be used for the expansion of high-speed internet with broadband availability of at least 50 Mbit/s. This means that underserved areas in the city districts of Chemnitz North (Altendorf, Borna-Heinersdorf, Glösa-Draisdorf, Fürth, Rabenstein, Rottluff, Schloßchemnitz, Schönau, Stelzendorf, Wittgensdorf) and Chemnitz South (Adelsberg, Bernsdorf) can be connected to the internet.d (Adelsberg, Bernsdorf, Einsiedel, Erfenschlag, Euba, Gablenz, Harthau, Hilbersdorf, Klaffenbach, Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain, Markersdorf, Reichenhain, Yorckgebiet) will receive corresponding network access.
The approval period ends on 31 December 2018; an exact order of the districts for the implementation of the construction measures has not yet been determined.
