Half-time for the City of Chemnitz's school building construction programme: 18 of the 21 measures were started in 2013

Spring 2014 sees the start of the general refurbishment of Rabenstein primary school and the refurbishment of Josephinen secondary school and Untere Luisen school

In 2013, extensive work began on 18 of the 21 schools included in the school building construction funding programme for the rapid implementation of the city of Chemnitz's school building construction programme. The city's building management and construction department awarded contracts to over 60 engineering and planning offices for this programme. In addition, a total of 177 contract award procedures for construction services have been carried out to date. This means that two thirds of the construction work has already been awarded to companies; the remaining contracts will be awarded between the beginning and middle of 2014. 2.5 million euros have already been realised in the measures already underway.

The three school building construction measures still outstanding concern the Rabenstein primary school, the Josephinen secondary school and the Untere-Luisen secondary school:

The refurbishment of Rabenstein primary school will start in spring 2014. The programme here includes the general refurbishment of the school building and sports hall, including outdoor facilities. A good 4.63 million euros will be invested, of which 1.76 million euros is subsidised. An award procedure for the planning services was carried out in advance for this measure. The procedure has now been completed and a planning office has already been commissioned with the further planning.

The two other school building construction projects will also be able to begin in spring 2014: The building permit for Josephinen Secondary School was granted at the beginning of December. The building project includes fire protection measures and the construction of a second structural escape route. A total of 800,000 euros will be invested, of which around 315,000 euros is subsidised. A decision on the planned construction project at Untere Luisen-Oberschule is expected from the state directorate in January 2013, meaning that the city's goal of completing the construction project by the end of 2014 is not jeopardised. 600,000 will be invested here for fire protection measures and the construction of a second structural escape route, of which just under €240,000 is subsidised.

Continuation of the school building construction programme in 2015/16: Over the next few days, the administration will be submitting a total of eight draft plans for construction measures planned for 2015 to 2016 to the Sächsische Aufbaubank for funding applications. The basis for these construction and renovation measures is the decision in principle (B-238/2013) taken by Chemnitz City Council at its meeting on 16 October 2013, which allows the school building construction programme to be continued in 2015/16 with an investment framework of 37 million euros.

The administration was commissioned to prepare and plan the measures - this concerns the following schools:

  • Refurbishment of Borna primary school
  • Extension of the Josephinen secondary school at the Agnesstraße site
  • Partial refurbishment of the BSZ für Technik III - Richard-Hartmann-Schule
  • Partial refurbishment of the Ernst Busch speech therapy school
  • Partial refurbishment of the evening grammar school
  • Refurbishment of the Rosa Luxemburg primary school
  • Refurbishment of the Flemming primary school
  • Refurbishment of the sports boarding school.

School building construction programme of the city of Chemnitz: The city's refurbishment programme for school buildings over the years 2013 and 2014 has an investment volume of around 40 million euros. The city is investing 24 million euros of this as its own contribution.

The school building construction programme will be continued in the years 2015 to 2016 with an investment volume of 37 million euros as a result of the above-mentioned fundamental decision by the city council.

In 2012, the special school building construction programme became the pilot project of the City of Chemnitz's participatory budget: citizens were able to use an online platform to have their say on the priority list for refurbishment projects at Chemnitz schools, which were ultimately registered for the Free State's funding programme.
