Guided tour of the air-raid tunnel exhibition
On Sunday, 4 March, from 4 to 5.30 pm, the adult education centre invites you to a guided tour of the permanent exhibition in the air raid shelter to commemorate the rescue of Chemnitz residents during the air war. The meeting point is at Fabrikstraße 6 (next to Kaßbergauffahrt). Participation costs 4 euros.
In January 1999, a permanent exhibition unique in Germany was opened at Fabrikstraße 6 in Chemnitz. It is a reminder that more than 10,000 citizens of the city survived in the shelter of the mountains while the bombs fell on the city.
Nazi propaganda had ensured that people in the East German cities felt safe for a long time during the air war of the 1940s. Nevertheless, even before the Second World War, plans began in Chemnitz to convert the historic underground tunnels into air raid shelters.
At the latest after the devastating air raids on Dresden, thousands of people from the Chemnitz city centre flocked to these public air-raid shelters when the air raid alarm sounded.
The guided tour is an opportunity to commemorate the 2,100 people who died on the night of the bombing from 5 to 6 March 1945 and to find out how thousands and thousands survived under the protection of the Chemnitz mountain spirits.
