"Growing up behind bars." As a teenager in a GDR prison

Adult education centre: Reading and discussion on 29 October, 7 to 8.30 pm, TIETZ, event hall

On Friday, 29 October, from 7 to 8.30 pm, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to a reading with contemporary witness, author and journalist Falk Mrázek in the TIETZ event hall. Falk Mrázek will be presenting his book "'Erwachsenwerden hinter Gittern.' Als Teenager im DDR-Knast", which has been published in the series of publications by the Saxon State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship.

Admission is free. Due to the limited number of places, registration is recommended at www.vhs-chemnitz.de or 0371 488-4343.

The memoir tells the story of the author's youth and imprisonment in the GDR, which took him to the Kaßberg in Chemnitz, among other places. Falk Mrázek was imprisoned in 1978 at the age of 17 for so-called Republikflucht. He had provoked his arrest at the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate by slipping under a barrier and running towards a guard with his hands up. In this way, he wanted to send a signal in favour of his parents' application to leave the country and hoped to gain his own freedom via the prisoner release programme. The young man subsequently spent time in various prisons in the GDR and had to do hard labour as a political prisoner in the Bitterfeld chemical combine before he was released to the West as a prisoner on release via the Kaßberg prison in what was then Karl-Marx-Stadt.

Following the reading, the author would like to enter into dialogue with his audience. The discussion will be moderated by Michaela Bausch, board member of the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e.V. Chemnitz.

The reading is a co-operation between the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e.V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. It is sponsored by the Saxon State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship.
