Ground-breaking ceremony for barrier-free pedestrian connection to Dresdner Straße at the main railway station, "New Access East"
The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the pedestrian link from Chemnitz Central Station to Dresdner Straße will take place on Wednesday, 8 May 2019 at 1 pm.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to Dresdner Straße at Gießerstraße.
The pedestrian link is a joint construction project by the City of Chemnitz and Deutsche Bahn AG, represented by DB Station und Service AG.
The existing escape tunnel from the main station will be extended and connected to the new access to Dresdner Straße at Gießerstraße by means of a staircase and lift. The access and the lift will be covered with a steel structure. To cross Dresdner Straße, a traffic light with pedestrian request will be installed and a bus stop will be built in the direction of Thomas-Mann-Platz to ensure the planned new routing of bus lines 21 and 31. Passenger information systems for the main railway station, CVAG and VMS as well as for the future long-distance bus terminal will be installed in the access area of the stairs to the tunnel. Free and additionally protected parking facilities are provided for bicycle traffic in the immediate access area. Access to the main station will later be in the area between the planned long-distance bus terminal and the car park.
Construction work began on schedule on 1 April 2019. The preparatory measures for construction are currently underway, such as obtaining a shaft licence and investigating munitions and explosive ordnance. The construction site access road is also being built and the construction site itself is being set up. Once the site is free of explosive ordnance, the sheet piling to secure the future excavation pit is expected to be installed from 2 May 2019.
The construction work should be completed by the end of June 2020.
The total cost of the project is around 3.86 million euros.
Krause & Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH from Neukirchen was commissioned with the construction work.
