Green space at the memorial in Stelzendorf redesigned
Inauguration of the public green space on 19 April, 2 p.m., Jagdschänkenstraße
The public green space at the memorial against war and international hatred in Stelzendorf, Jagdschänkenstraße (opposite H no. 161), will be officially opened on Friday, 19 April at 2 pm.
Representatives of the media are also cordially invited.
The redesigned green space is the result of civic engagement in co-operation with the City of Chemnitz. The Förderverein Stelzendorf e. V. had initiated and supported the redesign of the area surrounding the local memorial. It was supported by the planners from the City of Chemnitz's green space department. The association will continue to help maintain this small park. The design of the green space has been upgraded in such a way that the maintenance effort has also been optimised.
The hornbeam hedge, which could no longer be trimmed and was bare in places, was cleared by the end of February 2023. It was replaced with young hornbeams to visually separate the neighbouring properties at the rear of the area. The part of the hedge in the foreground was kept much lower to create a more inviting atmosphere. By framing the hedge, but not completely sealing it off, a quiet memorial area was created next to the busy Jagdschänkenstraße.
In addition, a soakaway with a connection to the road inlet was created to reduce and at best even prevent water ingress. In the past, heavy rainfall events had sometimes led to flooding. The path was paved so that leaves, branches and especially the fruit from the large oak tree can be easily swept away. The lawn was also transformed into a very finely structured area of cushioning shrubs so that all organic material and other rubbish can be easily removed. This also makes it easier to prevent acorns from being left behind. Regular mowing is then unnecessary.
The City of Chemnitz Parks Department commissioned the company Garten- und Landschaftsbau Gert Findeklee GmbH & Co KG, Chemnitz, to carry out the work. The total costs amount to around 22,000 euros. The fence construction cost an additional 1,500 euros. Work began in January 2023 and was completed on 1 March 2024. The maintenance work will continue until the end of October 2024.
Background
The small public green space around the memorial against war and international hatred in Stelzendorf on Jagdschänkenstraße had not been able to be economically maintained by the City of Chemnitz's Parks Department for several years. In 2007, the local association Förderverein zur Traditionspflege in Stelzendorf e. V. took over partial maintenance of the 190 square metre area, which has been carried out reliably over the years. This included regular lawn mowing and the removal of leaves and other rubbish. The City of Chemnitz's Parks and Gardens Department has in turn disposed of the waste produced during maintenance and has also taken care of the trees.
