Green space at the memorial against war and international hatred in Stelzendorf is being redesigned

The public green space around the memorial against war and international hatred on Jagdschänkenstraße in the Stelzendorf district of Chemnitz is currently being redesigned to enhance its design and optimise maintenance.

The path will be paved so that leaves, branches and acorns can be easily swept away. The lawn will also be transformed into a finely structured area of cushion shrubs. In this way, all organic material and other rubbish can also be easily removed. It will be easier to prevent acorns from being left behind and regular mowing will no longer be necessary.

Until the end of February, clearing work will be carried out on hornbeam hedges that can no longer be cut back into shape and are bare in places. This will be replaced by young hornbeams and given a staggered height. This will create a visual separation from the neighbouring properties at the rear of the site. The part of the hedge in the entrance area will be kept much lower to create an inviting atmosphere. The spatial, framing enclosure of the hedge, which does not, however, create complete seclusion, creates a quiet memorial area next to the busy Jagdschänkenstraße.

Further work will be carried out as soon as the weather is stable enough. A soakaway will be created with a connection to the existing road inlet in order to reduce - or at best even prevent - water ingress. In the past, flooding has sometimes occurred during heavy rainfall events.

The costs of the remodelling amount to a total of 19,000 euros. The work should be completed by 30 September.

The company Garten- u. Landschaftsbau Gert Findeklee GmbH & Co KG, Chemnitz, was commissioned by the City of Chemnitz Parks Department to improve the design and optimise the maintenance work.

The small public green space around the memorial against war and international hatred in Stelzendorf on Jagdschänkenstraße was one of the few green spaces to be handed over to the local association for the preservation of traditions in Stelzendorf e.V. for partial maintenance back in 2007.
The association has shown great commitment, regularly mowing the lawn and removing leaves and other rubbish from the 190 square metre area.
The City of Chemnitz's Parks and Gardens Department has once again disposed of the waste produced during maintenance and has also taken over the maintenance of the trees.
