Green light for funding application
City council approves "Pleißenbach green corridor" development area concept
The City of Chemnitz is applying for funding for the "Pleißenbach green corridor" concept from the "Future Urban Green" urban development programme of the Free State of Saxony. This was decided by the city council at its meeting today. The City of Chemnitz sees the funding programme as an important impetus for realising the urban planning and urban ecology goals of the Chemnitz 2020 urban development concept.
The "Pleißenbach green corridor" stretches from Altendorf along the valley of Limbacher Straße on the Pleißenbach via the castle pond area to Schönherrpark. The "Altendorf railway station area" priority is to be the main focus of funding under the "Future Urban Green" programme. The city is thus implementing the urban ecology goals of the urban development framework plan adopted in 2016. The derelict site of the former Altendorf railway station is to be revitalised as a new green and open space with new cycle paths and footpath connections and the banks of the Pleißenbach stream are to be designed in a near-natural way. Areas for recreation and leisure activities are to be created to promote the experience of nature. To this end, 1.57 million euros in funding has been requested for the period 2018 to 2022. The City of Chemnitz will provide its own contribution of 787,000 euros.
Background:
The aim of the "Future Urban Green" programme is to support cities in the implementation of urban development measures to improve the urban green infrastructure. The funding will be used for measures in action plans for selected development areas. For example, publicly accessible green and open spaces are to be created and networked. Improving the urban climate, distributing high-quality urban greenery fairly and preserving biodiversity are just as much a part of the measures as experiencing nature.
