“Grandad wasn’t a Nazi?” – Family research into National Socialism

Adult Education Centre: Workshop on 16 November, from 4 pm to 7 pm, Classroom 4.07, TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20

On Monday 16 November, from 4 pm to 7 pm, anyone interested is invited to attend a workshop at the Adult Education Centre on researching family history in relation to National Socialism. The workshop, led by the historian and journalist Dr Johannes Spohr, will take place in classroom 4.07 at TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20.
Participation is free of charge. Please register via the link to the event.

National Socialism continues to influence contemporary society in many different ways. Many people wonder what roles their family members, acquaintances or club members played during that period. Those who set out to conduct research do not always have access to extensive documentation. Sometimes, stories or personal documents provide initial clues. Some begin their search without any prior knowledge.

But how does one actually carry out research in an archive? What can be discovered there about one’s own ancestors – and what might not be revealed? How should the findings be interpreted?

Dr Johannes Spohr will introduce participants to the basics of research, offer suggestions and tips, and address individual questions about the research process. The workshop encourages participants to make use of archives and overcome obstacles. It will also explore the significance of such research – both on an individual and a societal level.

The workshop is a joint initiative of Buntmacher*innen e. V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. It is funded by the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz as part of the federal programme “Demokratie leben!” (Living Democracy!), as well as by the State Prevention Council of the Free State of Saxony.
