"Giving culture space"
A cultural strategy for the city of Chemnitz
At the upcoming City Council meeting on 30 January 2019, the City of Chemnitz will present its cultural strategy under the motto "Giving Culture Space". The strategy focuses on the cultural development of the city of Chemnitz from 2018 to 2030. Following the city council's decision, formats will be developed under the leadership of the Kulturbetrieb in order to realise the cultural strategy.
The Chemnitz Cultural Strategy 2018 to 2030 promotes cultural integration on three levels: At the individual level, cultural interests of the citizenry are recognised and preserved. The aim is to make cultural activities accessible to all population groups in the city. At an urban level, the cultural strategy provides impetus for the development of guidelines for city-wide planning and social issues relating to urban development. At a European level, the cultural strategy aims to anchor the city of Chemnitz in the supra-regional and international cultural landscape.
The cultural strategy aims to facilitate access to culture. It aims to optimise the exchange between stakeholders and create a communicative network. Cultural practitioners are to be further trained and professionalised. It comprises six thematic areas and formulates important directions for action.
- Modernity in Chemnitz
- Give space! Create conditions, develop funding models
- IndustryCulture
- Cultural and creative industries as a driving force
- Cultural education
- Cultural communication, cultural marketing and international co-operation
These topics are to be realised through concrete measures. Examples of these measures include simplified application procedures for cultural funding, the possibility of multi-year funding as well as funding for spontaneously emerging projects and an annual reserve fund. Other important measures relate to communication, public relations and marketing activities.
Background and additional information:
On 19 May 2004, the City Council adopted the Cultural Development Plan. By 2015, a series of preliminary works for the development of a new cultural strategy for the city of Chemnitz had been agreed. From 2016, six thematic areas were developed in a broad-based dynamic process, which are to form a guideline for a medium-term period up to 2030. On 31 May 2018, the Culture Committee (submission no. B-154/2018) decided on the focal points for the cultural strategy to be developed in detail. The public was involved with the presentation of template B-154/2018 and as part of the "Cultural Strategy Debate Day" on 3 May 2018. Comments and suggestions were taken into account in the further development of the strategy. By August 2018, those involved in the cultural strategy process had worked out the proposed measures for the topic areas in greater depth and prioritised them in order to map them in the complete document "Cultural Strategy of the City of Chemnitz for the Years 2018 to 2030".
The cultural strategy was jointly developed by around 150 people. The majority of them worked on a voluntary basis in thematic groups, workshops and future workshops. A steering team coordinated the entire process under the leadership of the cultural organisation. The editorial team collated all the available results and compiled and structured the texts.
