German Road Cycling Championships can take place as planned

The German Road Cycling Championships 2017 can take place as planned from 23 to 25 June in Chemnitz. This was decided by the city council at its meeting on Wednesday. Due to the significant cost increases compared to the originally planned budget, the administration had delegated the further decision on the organisation of the event to the city council. With the decision to organise the championships, the expected total costs now amount to 750,000 euros. Originally, an initial calculation had assumed total costs of 200,000 euros.

The additional requirement was due to the realisation of the necessary traffic concept. In the original calculation, 70,000 was planned for this. The calculation was based on the estimates of the city administration departments involved and only to a limited extent on experience from previous events. For example, the city of Erfurt, which hosted the event in 2016, had handed over traffic safety to the organiser. Other venues in recent years, such as Baunatal, Grimma and Sangerhausen, are small towns whose cost calculations are not comparable to the circumstances in Chemnitz. In Chemnitz, on the other hand, the goal agreed with the two cycling clubs involved in the organisation and with the German Cycling Federation was to bring the cycling event to the city centre and thus to the public.

Reasons for the high costs of the traffic concept:

  • The 20-kilometre road race route runs exclusively through the city centre with 108 junctions. The time trial runs beyond the city centre into the district of Central Saxony with 85 junctions.
  • This requires a large number of personnel to secure the route and check the signposting.
  • The diversion signs require a large number of appropriate signposts due to the many junctions to be closed.
