German Africa Prize winner in Chemnitz

Dr Abdel Kader Haidara reports on his work in Timbuktu - Invitation to a press conference on 10 October 2014 at Chemnitz Town Hall

The winner of the 2014 German Africa Prize comes from Chemnitz's twin city Timbuktu. Librarian Dr Abdel Kader Haidara received the prize of the Deutsche Afrika Stiftung e.V. from Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier yesterday. The award honours his commitment to preserving the ancient writings of the Ahmed Baba Institute.He saved centuries-old manuscripts from imminent destruction by Islamist rebels.

Haidara will also report on his work and the current situation in Timbuktu in his twin city of Chemnitz, which he already knows from previous visits. On Friday, 10 October 2014, he will be received by Mayor Petra Wesseler. Media representatives are cordially invited to attend. The press event will take place at 10.30 a.m. in Chemnitz City Hall, Grüner Salon (2nd floor).
