Georgius Agricola and mining in the Ore Mountains
Event to mark the town's 875th anniversary - lecture on 21 March, 6 p.m., Jakobikirche
Next Wednesday, 21 March at 6 pm, Prof. Dr Dr Friedrich Naumann will speak on the topic of "The Renaissance scholar Georgius Agricola and mining in the Ore Mountains". The lecture will take place in the Jakobikirche in Innere Klosterstraße. Admission is free.
Before the lecture, from 5.35 to 5.50 pm and afterwards, from approx. 7.40 to 7.55 pm, Dr Sebastian Liebold will play the carillon. Pieces from the Renaissance through the early Baroque to the present day will be played, including a mountain series.
Background:
The famous Chemnitz scholar Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Müntzer and Philipp Melanchthon, is undoubtedly one of those "giants of thought, passion and character, of versatility and erudition" who made our city famous beyond its borders. He lived within the walls of Chemnitz for almost 25 years, held the office of mayor four times, but devoted himself above all to the study of nature.
The scientific world appreciated him as an outstanding personality whose preoccupation with the earth, its treasures and their utilisation went hand in hand with educational aspirations and social commitment. This is why he still enjoys an outstanding reputation far beyond his native Saxony, especially as the founder of mineralogy and the mining sciences. His "De re metallica libri XII", which has since been translated into many languages around the world, is still regarded as an unrivalled standard work in the field of mining and metallurgy.
This year, Chemnitz is celebrating its 875th anniversary. A joint project by the Chemnitz History Society, the Chemnitz Saxon Industrial Museum, the Schloßberg Museum, the Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology and the Chemnitz City Archives entitled "875 years of history in twelve months" is honouring the city's history.
