Garage Campus receives further investment grant
Intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025
At its meeting today, the City Council decided to increase the investment grant to Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) for the Garage Campus, intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, by around €2 million. The increase is made up of the over-scheduled provision of the city's own funds and earmarked funding from the federal and state programme "Growth and Sustainable Renewal WEP" for the Zwickauer Straße development area. Originally, an investment grant of EUR 3 million was contractually agreed between the city and CVAG - the latter is the owner and developer of the car park campus - for the first construction phase.
Taking into account the listed building status, the following construction measures were planned for the garage campus in the original cost breakdown: Renewal of the electrics, installation of a heating system (frost-free, partially warm), a low-threshold, concept-orientated extension, the renovation of the roof area above the main building, including the skylights, as well as the restoration of the historic, single-storey construction of the former administration building. The project is currently under construction and should be completed by the Capital of Culture year 2025.
Unforeseeable and unavoidable, significant cost increases have arisen in the construction work to date. Based on the cost update and an updated cost reimbursement calculation, the maximum possible subsidy amount for CVAG is now around €5 million, which has been confirmed by the City of Chemnitz in the course of the preliminary subsidy audit. As the additional costs cannot be covered by CVAG itself, a higher investment grant is required.
