Gaming in the Chemnitz City Library
500 new console games for the Xbox and Playstation
From 29 March 2016, over 500 new Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS4 games will be available to borrow from the Central Library and the district library in the Vita Center. The spectrum ranges from sports games, platformers, action adventures and role-playing games to party and music games, strategy games and simulations.
In expanding its range of games, the city library is responding to frequent requests from young people and young adult customers in particular. As with the previous console and computer games and films, titles with a USK 18 rating will not be included in the library's games collection. Each user can initially borrow a maximum of five games per console type. The loan period is two weeks.
A working group at the city library is currently examining further possible uses for the new games. Among other things, game tournaments, game get-togethers for the whole family, workshops and a games area are being discussed.
Playing and learning are often seen as opposites. However, younger generations are growing up with computer games as a matter of course. They demonstrate how gaming fun, learning and work can go hand in hand and how various skills can be promoted through gaming.
For many libraries, gaming has become an integral part of their daily work. Games are not only relevant in terms of lending computer and console games, but also in the context of events and on-site gaming opportunities. Chemnitz City Library will also be increasingly focussing on this trend in the future.
