Future adventure: young people discover their strengths
"Come on tour - my strengths, my future": launch of the career guidance and life planning project for school pupils
"You can do more than you know. Try out what you enjoy, at home, at school and in your next internship." This is a key message of the "Come on tour - my strengths, my future" project, which began today, 7 May 2019, for the second time in Chemnitz. From 7 to 10 May 2019, around 750 young people in the 7th and 8th grades of secondary schools will discover their strengths on a 500 square metre adventure course.
"Choosing a career is often the first important decision that young people have to make independently in life. All pupils should be well prepared for this through the joint efforts of schools, parents, local authorities and institutions. But everyone has to decide for themselves," said Mayor Ralph Burghart at today's opening. Together with Angelika Hugel, Chairwoman of the Management Board, Chemnitz Employment Agency, he welcomed the pupils from Altendorf Secondary School and Diesterweg Secondary School, who completed the first round of the course. komm auf Tour' perfectly complements our daily work with young people in careers counselling. There, too, the strengths and interests of the young people play a key role. We want to show young people that everyone is good at something. Confidence in yourself is the be-all and end-all. I am sure that the pupils will leave the course with a good feeling and that the follow-up work at school, at home and in careers counselling will be successful in the long term," says Angelika Hugel.
"Come on tour" takes you on a fast-paced journey through game stations: from the travel terminal via the time tunnel to the labyrinth and from the storm-free booth via the stage to the evaluation. Depending on their choice of task and solution, the pupils collect feedback in the form of various strengths and practise assessing themselves and others. At the end, the young people use so-called "strength cabinets" to discover which activities and occupational fields match their strengths and which internships they could try out. In addition to career guidance, life planning plays an important role in the project. The young people look at their life dreams, role models and opportunities: "How do I want to live later - what is possible?" By solving action-orientated tasks, they learn that they can choose between different options and make their own decisions.
The mothers and fathers of the young people taking part find out at an information evening in the adventure course how they can support their daughter or son in the process of choosing a career and planning their life until they leave school. Teachers are given suggestions on how they can deepen the topics at school in the long term. The cooperation between the various players involved in career guidance and life planning during the project strengthens the local network and promotes the sustainability of "komm auf Tour - meine Stärken, meine Zukunft".
