Further brownfield sites to be revitalised
At its meeting today, the city council decided to revitalise further brownfield sites. The list supplements the City of Chemnitz's "brownfields concept" adopted by the City Council in 2015 and is necessary in order to be able to apply for funding for clearing and processing. Depending on the programme and type of brownfield site, between 70 percent and 90 percent funding is available from programmes of the Free State of Saxony and the EU.
As brownfield sites are potential building land in the centre of the city, it has become a priority task of urban renewal to clear and reuse them. The resolution covers eight brownfield sites that are to be cleared and restored. A large proportion of them are owned by the city.
These include, for example, a former factory building on Schadestrasse, which is to be removed. The area is then to be landscaped and kept free for later municipal use. The measure is scheduled to take place in 2024. The costs amount to around 91,000 euros, 90 percent of which can be covered by funds from the state brownfield programme.
The residential building at Frankenberger Straße 229 is also to be demolished and the area subsequently landscaped. The building is currently privately owned and the City of Chemnitz intends to purchase it.
Another area to be demolished is a former factory building at Voigtstraße 25 between the tram museum and the games museum. After demolition, the brownfield site is to be landscaped and kept free for subsequent use and development. The measure is planned for 2027/2028 and will cost around 150,000 euros according to current plans.
