Funding decisions from the federal and state governments

On Thursday, 2 December at 10 a.m., the City of Chemnitz will receive two funding decisions from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community and the Saxon Ministry of the Interior totalling 1.73 million euros. Andreas Schumann, Head of the Sports Department at the Saxon Ministry of the Interior, hands over the notifications to the Head of the Sports Department, Roger Rabenhold.
Media representatives are cordially invited to a photo opportunity in the multi-purpose athletics hall at the Sportforum. You can reach the hall via Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße. The entrance is at the front of the building.
The funding will be used for two construction projects in the Sportforum: one for the multi-purpose athletics hall and the other for the athletics training facility (type C).
Athletics multi-purpose hall
In the multi-purpose athletics hall, the running track and all associated sports areas will be renovated. In addition, the safety lighting, the voice alarm system and the fire protection system will be renewed.
The multi-purpose athletics hall was built in 1995. Due to the age of the sports hall, both the fire protection repairs and the renewal of the running tracks and sports surfaces are absolutely essential. The circular running track had collapsed in various places and already had to be repaired in parts. The substructure shows defects with mould infestation on the underside of the running track area as well as damage to the wooden substructure caused by wood-destroying fungi.
The long jump facility is in constant use, is therefore worn out and also urgently needs to be renovated.
The multi-purpose athletics hall is the main training facility for the national athletics centre in Chemnitz and is also used as a training facility by athletes from the national gymnastics, cycling, figure skating and speed skating centres.
The costs for the refurbishment totalled 1.68 million euros. The federal and state governments are each subsidising the project with around 456,000 euros.
The construction work already began in May - an early start of the project was approved without the need for funding - and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Following the relevant approvals, the hall should be ready for use again at the end of January.
Athletics training facility (type C)
The athletics training facility (type C) at the Sportforum is being reconstructed. It is to be built around the existing artificial turf pitch.
The original athletics training facility was built in 1963. In the course of a necessary new construction of the artificial turf pitch in 2012, it was already prepared for further expansion. In the process, a ring drainage system was laid in the areas of the circular running track and the lighting system was installed at an appropriate distance.
The new training facility will have a 400-metre circular track with four lanes, five straight individual lanes for the sprint and hurdle distances, a high jump facility in the southern segment, a pole vault facility in the northern segment, a combined track for the sprints and hurdles and a track for the hurdles.a combined triple facility for long jump and triple jump in the northern segment and a shot put training facility in the northern segment.
Further planning is to be finalised in 2022 and construction is to begin in 2023, with completion scheduled for the same year.
The costs for the reconstruction of the facility total 1.42 million euros. The federal and state governments are each subsidising this measure with around 405,000 euros.
