Funding decision for Pleißenbach neighbourhood park handed over
520,000 euros for the first construction phase of the intervention area
Mayor Michael Stötzer today received a grant of 520,000 euros for the Pleißenbach neighbourhood park from the President of the State Directorate of Saxony (LDS), Regina Kraushaar. The grant will go towards the first construction phase for the redesign of the green corridor in Chemnitz-Altendorf, which, as part of "Stadt am Fluss", is an important intervention area for Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025.
With the help of the approved funding, the Pleißenbach will initially be redesigned in a natural way on the site of a former laundry at the junction of Limbacher Strasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse. The course of the Pleißenbach stream had been straightened in large parts in a non-natural development. It is now to be renaturalised in accordance with the development plan. Bank and bed stabilisation will be dismantled and piping will be opened up in order to transform the Pleißenbach back into a natural watercourse. By modelling a near-natural watercourse profile, the planned measures are intended to revive the ecological functions of the stream.
The planned total costs for the first construction phase amount to around 590,000 euros. The City of Chemnitz will cover the difference of around 70,000 euros from its own budget.
Regina Kraushaar, President of the State Directorate of Saxony: "With the funding from the Free State of Saxony, which my office is making available here, the area around the former Altendorf goods station can be awakened from years of deep slumber. In future, the Pleißenbach will be the centrepiece of the new district park: For all Chemnitz residents and their guests, the park will then invite them to stroll, linger and relax."

The neighbourhood park, as one of the "Stadt am Fluss" projects, will create a place that will have a far-reaching impact on the city community - even beyond 2025."
Background:
The site of the former Altendorf goods station between Beyerstrasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse is currently characterised by fallow land, succession and an ecologically disadvantaged, heavily built-up natural area. Now there is an opportunity to create a new part of the city with open spaces for public use as well as further areas for housing, community use and commerce, including flood protection.
