Funding commitment of over 4 million euros for the sports forum

Federal government supports renovation and remodelling of the main stadium

The refurbishment and reconstruction of the main stadium in the Chemnitz Sportforum will be funded with 4,034,000 euros from the federal programme "Refurbishment of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture". This was announced by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag at its meeting today. The special programme comprises a total of 100 million euros.

"It's a great sign for the sports city of Chemnitz. I would like to thank everyone involved who fought hard for the funding of this construction project. The refurbishment of the main stadium will keep the ball rolling that everyone has set in motion together. Following the opening of the small gymnastics hall, the start of construction of the large gymnastics hall and now the start of the main stadium, the good conditions we have at the Sportforum will be further improved. This will allow us to continue to draw attention to ourselves not only locally, but also nationally and internationally," says Ralph Burghart, Mayor for Education, Social Affairs, Youth, Culture and Sport.

The redevelopment of the main stadium in the Sportforum includes the renovation of the tower building with accommodation for the Olympic training centre, demolition of the spectator facility in the south curve area and redesign of the north curve. The grandstand areas to be retained will be paved and used as standing and recreation areas during events. The entire area is to be newly fenced, the goal judge's tower rebuilt and the technical facilities renewed. The overall construction project is divided into five sections. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2019 and end in December 2020. The total costs amount to around 9.4 million euros.
