Funding application for the Chemnitz theatre
Opportunity for extensive renovation of the building through new federal programme
The City of Chemnitz is submitting a project application to a new federal programme for the possible extensive refurbishment of the Schauspielhaus. This federal programme provides short-term funding for investments in municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture.
The aim of the application is not only to carry out the already agreed fire protection refurbishment of the theatre, but also to upgrade the building in terms of energy efficiency, technology and accessibility.
If the Chemnitz City Council approves the application in October, the federal government can decide on the funding at the beginning of next year.
Treasurer Ralph Burghart: "The funding programme now offers us a great opportunity at very short notice to modernise the theatre extensively and bring it up to the latest technical standards."
With regard to the future use of the Schauspielhaus, the City of Chemnitz and Chemnitz Theatre have come to the joint conclusion that a return to the theatre is not realistic until 2026. The reason for this is the weak points found in the theatre during the current investigations, which need to be renovated in addition to the necessary fire safety upgrades. Added to this is the difficult situation in the construction industry. However, in order to maintain the theatre's offering, performances will continue to take place in the Spinnbau.
General Director Dr Christoph Dittrich: "The current investigations have revealed more negative findings than expected. It also makes sense to remain in the Spinnbau until the refurbishment of the Schauspielhaus has been completed in order to put the extensive programme for the Capital of Culture year on a secure footing."
