Fundamental renewal of the southern ring road in the section from Zschopauer Straße to Bernsdorfer Straße approved
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to carry out a thorough renewal of the Südring in the section from Zschopauer Straße to Bernsdorfer Straße. The construction project is scheduled to last from the beginning of July to the end of October 2024. The costs amount to a total of 2.3 million euros.
Due to the high volume of traffic, the refurbishment can only be carried out on one side of the road. One direction of travel will be completely closed and traffic will be guided in two directions on the other 6.50 metre wide carriageway. For this reason, additional crossings will be built across the central reservation in the area of the Zschopauer Straße ramps before the construction work begins.
Construction east side - traffic routing via west side
The realisation of the construction project begins with the east side. Through traffic on the southbound carriageway will be routed in a single lane on the westbound carriageway for the entire length of the refurbishment, but heavy goods vehicles travelling towards the B 174 (border) will be diverted via Bernsdorfer Straße - Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße - Zschopauer Straße.
The milling work will start at the beginning of the turning lane of the south-east ramp (access from the south ring road onto the B174) and will be completed up to the south-east ramp on Zschopauer Straße. This section must be completed during the summer holidays. Only then will the milling work continue at the start of construction on Bernsdorfer Straße. The right-hand lane of Zschopauer Straße will also be repaired until shortly before Mittagleite.
The pedestrian and cycle route on Zschopauer Straße out of town will be interrupted during the renovation of the south-east ramp. Pedestrians and cyclists will be guided over the traffic islands at the east ramps onto the footpath and cycle path towards the city centre. The return to the south side takes place at the Richterweg traffic lights. The city-bound footpath and cycle path will be used for both directions over a length of approx. 160 metres.
The Mittagleite connection to the Südring will be fully closed during the refurbishment of the east side. Entry and exit from the residential area is possible via Richterweg and Jägerschlößchenstraße.
Construction west side - traffic routing via east side
The west side with the south-west ramp will be renovated in one go after completion of the construction phase on the east side. At the Bernsdorfer Straße/Südring junction, through traffic on the south ring road will be routed to the refurbished east carriageway in a single lane for the entire length of the construction project.
Heavy goods traffic can flow from the south to the B 174 towards the border via the refurbished south-east ramp. The south-west ramp is fully closed during the refurbishment of the west side, as the volume of traffic there is much lower than on the south-east ramp. Traffic from Zschopauer Straße (B 174) coming from the city will be routed via Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße - Bernsdorfer Straße to the Bernsdorfer Straße/Südring junction.
The Mittagleite connection is possible from Bernsdorfer Straße and on the right from Zschopauer Straße.
Background:
The volume of traffic and especially the proportion of heavy goods vehicles between Neefestraße and Zschopauer Straße (B174) has increased significantly in recent years, mainly due to the transit traffic for lorries via the B174 to the Czech Republic. This has resulted in road damage that needs to be repaired in sections.
