"Free Friday" in the museums of the city of Chemnitz

Free museum visit from 3 May

From 3 May, anyone interested can visit the museum free of charge on the first Friday of every month. This was decided by the city council in its December meeting with the budget resolution for 2019/2020. This includes all museums of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz, Museum Gunzenhauser, Schloßbergmuseum, Henry van de Velde Museum in the Villa Esche and Burg Rabenstein), the Museum für Naturkunde, the Neue Sächsische Galerie and the Industriemuseum Chemnitz.

"With the visitor-friendly free Friday, which is aimed at all visitors from near and far, nothing stands in the way of an art-loving start to the weekend," explains Dr Frédéric Bußmann, General Director of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.

Ralph Burghart, Mayor for Education, Social Affairs, Youth, Culture and Sport of the City of Chemnitz, also welcomes the fact that, in addition to children and young people, for whom museum visits have already been free for around two years, everyone now has free admission to the city's diverse museum programme once a month. "The cultural policy goal of free admission is to attract visitors who don't normally come to museums and to offer free participation in art, culture and education. It also aims to revitalise and open up the museums. The experience of other cities in Germany shows that considerable effects can be achieved, particularly with visitor groups up to the age of 30," says the Mayor of Culture.
