Free admission for children and young people to free museums remains unchanged

With the budget planning resolution for the years 2019 and 2020, admission for children and young people as well as school pupils will continue to be free of charge, even for privately funded museums.

With resolution no. B-156/2017, another important step has been taken to support the central theme of "participation" of children and young people in knowledge transfer and the educational mission of museums in Chemnitz. The new admission model has got off to a successful start. Regardless of their social circumstances, children and young people can freely participate in art and culture. In 2018, the number of visitors to the participating museums increased. "More and more visitors are using the facilities who were previously unable to do so for financial reasons," reports the Deutsches SPIELEmuseum e. V., for example.


For some schools, free admission is the deciding factor in favour of visiting a museum. The Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge Chemnitz e. V. reports that the number of group visits from educational institutions that also include a visit to the museum in their programme is growing.


The Eberdorf School Museum e. V. is increasingly offering historical lessons and corresponding guided tours to its largest visitor base, day-care centres and primary school classes. The institution was literally overrun with the introduction of the new admission model.


As a result, admission to the following museums remains free of charge for children and young people:

  • Deutsches SPIELEmuseum e. V. Chemnitz
  • Chemnitz Tram Museum (AG Straßenbahnfreunde Chemnitz e.V.)
  • Museum for Saxon Vehicles Chemnitz e. V.
  • Saxon Railway Museum e. V. Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf
  • Museum of technology for rope drainage (Eisenbahnfreunde "RICHARD HARTMANN" Chemnitz e. V.)
  • Ebersdorf School Museum e. V.

For the museums mentioned, the City of Chemnitz will cover the costs for the loss of income due to free admission. All independent museums that receive support from the City of Chemnitz's municipal art and culture funding programme and have previously charged admission to children and young people are eligible.
